Weipa Aquatic and Sports Precinct (WASP)
Rio Tinto Australia (RTA) undertake bauxite mining operations in and around the community of Weipa. RTA are significant contributors to the economy and infrastructure of western Cape York. As part of a wider programme of improving the social infrastructure of the Weipa community, RTA engaged CP Architects to provide architectural services for a new Sporting Centre at Rocky Point.
The site is located immediately adjacent the swimming pool, cricket oval, storm surge shelter and Weipa Town Authority. The Centre includes a multi-purpose indoor court, 3no. squash courts, yoga and dance studio, gymnasium, 3no. tennis courts, creche and associated amenities. The building planning is designed to link with adjacent social infrastructure. The building forms are cost effective envelopes that reflect the largely pre-fabricated vernacular of the mining community.
