AFL Cape York House for Girls

The AFL Cape York House for Girls in Redlynch is a purpose-built boarding facility catering for up to 48 adolescent female students from Cape York, Gulf and Torres Strait. Completed in 2019, the House for girls compliments previously constructed House for Boys in Cairns.

In addition to providing residential boarding, the House for girls provides tutoring, mentoring and student leadership training to foster holistic personal development for girls selected from remote far North Queensland communities.

The facility includes five separate buildings; a communal dining, kitchen, gym and administration building, separate two storey accommodation buildings for both younger and older girls, two detached caretaker houses all surrounding a central courtyard space.

The design of the facility deliberately avoids conventional institutional and suburban housing models. The building’s configurations, forms and finishes seek to create a safe, secure and culturally appropriate living environment that takes advantage of the natural setting.
