ST STEPHEN'S CATHOLIC COLLEGE INNOVATION CENTRE — ST STEPHEN'S CATHOLIC COLLEGE INNOVATION CENTRE — MAREEBA, QLD

The Innovation Centre is a contemporary design response to a highly refined Client functional brief informed by a progressive secondary school educational pedagogy. It is a space for ideating, collaborating, testing and prototyping.

The building layout responds to the introspective brief of highly connected internal areas. A central multi-purpose ‘forum’ space provides for a direct instruction area, collaborative working, central gathering and presentation area; with access to all other flanking functional spaces. These include a digital technology classroom, virtual reality classroom, multi-media production space with recording booths, ‘maker space’ and agricultural science laboratory, small and large meeting rooms, and a staff room. The College IT base is also located within the building to support the tech-based teaching and learning.

Natural light filtration is managed through extensive glazing, which also assists with passive supervision of all parts of the building. The finishes reflect the innovation centric brief, provide way finding, incorporate colours that support creativity and energy, and manage the acoustic requirements of the multi-function spaces.

We were pleased to receive the 2026 Australian Institute of Architects FNQ - Commendation for Interior Architecture Award and extend our congratulations to the project team for their collaborative effort in executing the Innovation Centre.

MAMU PRIMARY HEALTH WELLNESS CENTRE — INNISFAIL, Q MAMU PRIMARY HEALTH WELLNESS CENTRE — INNISFAIL, QLD

The recently completed Mamu Primary Health Wellness Centre was custom designed in consultation with Mamu Health Service to expand and improve the delivery of health services in the region, which provides culturally appropriate and comprehensive health care programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the local community.

A large, cantilevered awning extends from the building entry over the footpath providing a welcoming entry experience to encourage patronage, cover to a generous outdoor waiting area and protection from the western sun.

This street elevation also thoughtfully references Innisfail's established art deco building design heritage in a modern and culturally appropriate design response.

The finishes were selected to reflect the colours and textures of the Mamu people who are indigenous to the coastal rainforest region south of Cairns. Stone and timber finishes are blended with rainforest green and natural patterns to reflect the colours and textures of their country.

The 570m² Centre includes treatment areas, consulting rooms, staff training, meeting spaces, administration and clinical support facilities, and a securely connected residence for staff and student accommodation. A helipad on site provides emergency access to Cairns Hospital and beyond.

It has also been designed to be completely off grid, with power provided by a rooftop PV array connected to battery storage and a generator back-up, and water supplied from a bore and rainwater storage.

The Centre is an infrastructure exemplar for other remote facilities under consideration by Queensland Health, significantly improving access to health services for remote communities within the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service district.

Congratulations to all involved.
